چکیده

Numerical simulation has now become an integral part of engineering design process. Critical design decisions are routinely made based on the simulation results and conclusions. ¥_rification and validation of the reliability of the numerical simulation is therefore vitally important in the engineering design processes. We propose to develop theories and methodologies that can automatically provide quantitative information about the reliability of the numerical simulation by estimating numerical approximation error, computational model induced errors and the uncertainties contained in the mathematical models so that the reliability of the numerical simulation can be verified and validated. We also propose to develop and implement methodologies and techniques that can control the error and uncertainty during the numerical simulation so that the reliability of the numerical simulation can be improved. Key words, error and uncertainty in numerical simulation, ZZ error estimators, error energy spectrum, mapping closure approximation, adaptive mesh refinement Subject classification. Fluid Mechanics

Modeling Uncertainties in the Prediction of the Acoustic Wavefield in a Shelfbeak Environment

The uncertainties in the predicted acoustic wavefield associated with the transmission of lowfrequency sound from the continental slope, through the shelfbreak front, onto the continental shelf are examined. The locale and sensor geometry being investigated is that of the New England continental shelfbreak with a moored low-frequency sound source on the slope. Our method of investigation employ...

Review of Output-Based Error Estimation and Mesh Adaptation in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Error estimation and control are critical ingredients for improving the reliability of computational simulations. Adjoint-based techniques can be used to both estimate the error in chosen solution outputs and to provide local indicators for adaptive refinement. This article reviews recent work on these techniques for computational fluid dynamics applications in aerospace engineering. The defini...

Accounting for the uncertainty of speech estimates in the complex domain for minimum mean square error speech enhancement

Uncertainty decoding and uncertainty propagation, or error propagation, techniques have emerged as a powerful tool to increase the accuracy of automatic speech recognition systems by employing an uncertain, or probabilistic, description of the speech features rather than the usual point estimate. In this paper we analyze the uncertainty generated in the complex Fourier domain when performing sp...
